Common Mistakes in Prayer and How to Avoid Them – Urban Rugs

Salah is the most intimate act of worship we perform daily. It’s not just a ritual, it’s a connection, a conversation, a lifeline between us and Allah. But sometimes, without realizing it, we fall into common mistakes that affect the quality and validity of our prayer.

The good news? Most of these can be fixed with a little awareness and intention. Let’s go through them:

1.    Delaying the Prayer without a Valid Reason

The mistake: Putting off Salah until the last few minutes of its time or regularly praying late.

Why it matters: The Prophet ﷺ said, "The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done at their proper times." (Bukhari)

How to avoid it:

·          Set alarms with enough buffer time.

·          Build your schedule around Salah.

·         Use prayer reminder apps.

2.    Lack of Focus (Khushoo')

The mistake: Praying while the mind is elsewhere.

Why it matters: The heart of Salah is connection. Without khushoo’, it becomes mechanical.

How to avoid it:

·         Remind yourself: Allah is watching and listening to me.

·          Understand what you're reciting.

·          Eliminate distractions.

3.    Incorrect Pronunciation of Surahs or Dhikr

The mistake: Mispronouncing parts of Surah Al-Fatiha or other essential recitations.

Why it matters: Repeated mistakes can invalidate the prayer.

How to avoid it:

·         Listen carefully to Qur’an.

·          Practice slowly and consistently.

·         Record and review your recitation.

4.    Incorrect Physical Postures

The mistake: Moving too fast or not letting the body settle.

Why it matters: The Prophet ﷺ said: "Pray as you have seen me praying." (Bukhari)

How to avoid it:

·          Take your time in each position.

·         Watch Salah tutorials.

·         Focus on movements as acts of submission.

5.    Praying in an Unclean Place or Clothes

The mistake: Praying in a place that’s not clean or with impure clothes.

Why it matters: Purity is a condition for Salah.

How to avoid it:

·         Use a clean prayer mat.

·         Check clothes for impurities.

·          Teach children early about taharah.

6.    Not Facing the Qiblah Properly

The mistake: Being careless about Qiblah direction.

Why it matters: Facing the Qiblah is a condition for valid prayer.

How to avoid it:

·         Use Qiblah apps or landmarks.

·          Check direction before you begin.

7.    Looking Left, Right, or Up While Praying

The mistake: Letting the eyes wander during prayer.

Why it matters: Our Prophet ﷺ instructed us to keep our gaze on the place of sujood to maintain focus and humility.

How to avoid it:

·         Train yourself to focus on the place of sujood.

·          Gently bring your gaze back when it drifts.

·         Practice mindfulness before and during Salah.

8.    Wearing Clothes That Do Not Cover the Awrah (Men and Women)

The mistake: Wearing tight or revealing clothing that doesn't properly cover the awrah.

Why it matters: Proper clothing is a requirement for valid prayer.

How to avoid it:

·         For men: Cover from navel to knees.

·          For women: Cover entire body except hands and face.

·          Avoid tight or see-through clothing by praying in a modest prayer wear.

9.    Not Turning Off the Phone or Other Loud Devices

The mistake: Allowing phones or devices to ring or vibrate during prayer.

Why it matters: It distracts you and others, breaking the tranquility of the Salah.

How to avoid it:

·         Silence your phone before praying.

·         Keep your device in another room if needed.

10. Crossing in Front of a Praying Person

The mistake: Walking directly in front of someone who is praying.

Why it matters: It disrupts the prayer and shows disrespect to the worshipper’s connection with Allah.

How to avoid it:

·         Always walk behind the person praying if possible.

·         If you must pass, look for a sutrah (a barrier) placed in front of them; it is permissible to pass beyond the sutrah.

·         Use a sutrah yourself when you pray, especially in public spaces, to protect your prayer.

Mistakes in Salah don’t mean you’re a bad Muslim. They mean you're human and capable of improvement. The key is to seek knowledge, ask Allah for help, and keep striving for sincerity and excellence.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “The first thing a servant will be held accountable for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer.” Let’s make it count, not just in number but in quality.
